This Is Our Kind of Opera

Hold on to your organs (and your sanity)—this week on Messed Up Movies, we dove scalpel-first into Repo! The Genetic Opera. With filmmaker Michelle Iannantuono guiding the way, we dissected this dystopian, rock opera fever dream, where the only thing more shocking than the plot twists is Paris Hilton’s performance.

Michelle’s Pick: Michelle fell in love with Repo! in high school and made it clear: this film is the perfect blend of “messed up” and “catchy.” We learned about her passion for the film’s Blade Runner-meets-Goth karaoke vibes, her love for Blind Mag (she even knows the Latin lyrics), and her dream to cosplay as an opera-singing bird queen. Who wouldn’t?

Highlights from the Episode:

  1. Most Messed Up Moment:

    • Griffey nominated Shiloh’s blink-and-it’s-forgiven reaction to learning her dad poisoned her as a child. Casual.

    • Michelle countered with the delightful nightmare of a guy being used as a corpse puppet. (Anthony Head is clearly too talented to be trusted with knives.)

  2. Horror Musical Rankings:

    • Michelle and the crew gave love to Phantom of the Opera, Rocky Horror, Little Shop of Horrors, and even Sweeney Todd (despite the singing-ish). Repo! obviously claims the top spot for sheer “WTF am I watching?” energy.

  3. Paris Hilton’s Redemption Arc:

    • The heiress proved she’s more than just tabloid fodder, delivering a surprisingly solid performance. Fun fact: she discovered the script in prison. (A true Shawshank Redemption moment if we’ve ever heard one.)

  4. Blind Mag’s Finale Steals the Show:

    • Sarah Brightman’s eye-plucking, chandelier-swinging, operatic sendoff left the gang stunned. Michelle declared it the pinnacle of cinematic gothic drama, and we wholeheartedly agree.

Takeaway: This movie is the rock opera lovechild of The Matrix, Saw, and Tim Burton’s wildest fever dream. It’s chaotic, theatrical, and unapologetically weird—just like our podcast. If you haven’t seen it, grab some Zydrate, buckle up, and prepare to question everything you thought you knew about musicals.

See You Friday: We’re talking with the team behind the college horror anthology film Welcome Week. Until then, don’t forget to check out Michelle’s Livescreamers and keep supporting indie filmmakers. Or else… you know, repo men. 🩸
